DSUSB, D5100, Win8 64bit and Nebulosity3

Post by willcarney » Wed Apr 16, 2014 5:31 pm

I have a Windows 8.1 64bit USB 3.0 machine. I am trying to connect my Nikon D5100 to Nebulosity3. It will connect to Nikon ViewNX2. I have run the USBCheck and it works. I can connect DSLR and it works. I took a 40 second test and a 60 second test just now. What does not work is Nebulosity3. It won't connect at all. It does not have a Human Interface Device as hardware option and the DSUB is not ASCOM so how is it connected? When I first plugged in the DSUB it never went to "Found new Hardware" and "Installing Drivers" routines. When I checked the device manager for the DSUB it said these as the drivers. hidclass.sys, hidparse.sys, hidusb.sys It did not mention any .inf files. Is there a trick to getting it to connect to Nebulosity3?

Are you using the camera's USB cable AND the DSUSB together, then setting up in Preferences as explained on page 74 and 75 of this document:

Yes I am using the two cables. DSLR will connect. The new program BackYardNikon will connect and control which is probably what I'll use. Nebulosity3 has nothing in the camera control that works. There is no Nikon camera, human interface adapter, etc. DigicX for Canon won't work for Nikon. No matter what settings I've tried on the camera or in Nublosity3 the camera will not be recognized by Nebulosity3. William

According to this webpage:
http://www.stark-labs.com/nebulosity.html
Nikon cameras are not supported by Nebulosity. Sorry, I missed this in my first reply.

Thanks. I given up on Neb3 and Backyard Nikon which is neither is not working on my laptop. I'm trying DSLR now but getting equally frustrated. I get it to connect but it won't fire any shutter. I think it's a communication problem since the BYN works on a Vista laptop except bulb. All shutter speed fire on that laptop except bulb. I had the Nikon working before on my Win8 system but for some reason it won't now. So I'm pretty sure it's a computer issue with Windows 8.1/64bit.

I'm using the DSUB but right now can't get any program to control bulb on my D5100. :(

I've only had my D5100 for three month's and I'm already thinking about selling it. Problem is there is NO Canon in it's or the D5300 price range I like over either Nikon.

Using the DSUB and the new program BackYard Nikon I can take shots up to 30 seconds. But it won't work with bulb. DSLR won't work either in bulb. Is this a cable or software issue???? I thought that the DSUB allowed bulb. I have a Nikon D5100 but can't control it using bulb. Any suggestions??

Is the camera in manual exposure mode and autofocus disabled?

That's with a Nikon lens of course. With a telescope there is no AF off. Menu is set to LongExposureNR, off High ISONR off, Release mode is usually single. It does connect since it will fire shutter other than bulb. It just won't fire bulb.

Hmmm.... Not sure what it could be then. Still sounds like something in the camera is not set up right. Have you tried asking Craig Stark at Stark Labs?

Nebulosity does not work with Nikon's. I've tried the DSLR but get the same results, no bulb. If I could get DSLR to work that would be helpful. I did send Craig a note. But I'm thinking this is a computer issue.

OK, have you tried it on a different computer?

In DSLR Shutter (also from Stark Labs) under the file menu are three different options for the AF (autofocus) signal. Did you try all three?

Tried all three. DSLR won't fire shutter at all. Also same results on another laptop running Vista. DSLR won't fire on that one either. No matter what exposure. The new Backyard Nikon program also will not fire the bulb. Only fires the other shutters. So same results with two laptops. Makes me wonder if it's the DSUB. The check changes the led but does not fire shutter.

Thanks Doug. It's on it's way. I actually hope it's something with the box. Other wise I have an issue in two different computers. :( Not something that's going to be fixed easily.
