Pinout on 3.5mm matching E3 pins?

Post by bradtem » Tue May 11, 2010 11:51 am

Yesterday I was looking for a shutter control cable with Canon N3 and a 2.5mm plug on it. There is a community of users of a motorized telescope mount known as the Orion Teletrack/Merlin/Sky-Watcher multimount which has a 2.5mm jack which will command shutter release for photography. People with the older Canon cameras which use a 2.5mm plug (E3) on the camera can use the included 2.5mm to 2.5mm cable directly but the rest of the world needs adapters.

Your cables area almost there but they are 3.5mm not 2.5mm. It's easy to get an adapter for that -- as long as your pinout is the same as that used by the mount. So the question is, do you know if it is the same, or failing that, what is your pinout?

Note that because this site has no other way to ask a pre-sales question but to go through a complex process to join this message board and then wait a day for approval, I purchased another cable from china (which had 2.5mm on it and was only $6 shipped) but it will take some time to come. Others in the community will be interested in knowing if your cable will work, however.

The pinout for our cables can be found on page 5 of this document:

Please let me know if this is compatible with the mount. If so, we could stock a 3.5mm female to 2.5mm male adapter to make it easier for customers to find everything they need here.

Sorry that you had to go through the process of signing up for tech support to get your question answered. We do publish our email address sales@ShoestringAstronomy.com several places on our website including our main entrance to the store:

and the page for ordering information:
