Maxim DL6 PRO/ DSUSB/Nikon D7000 - can't connect camera error

Post by angelfj1 » Tue Jun 21, 2016 6:39 pm

Hello
I am not able to connect and control my Nikon D7000 using Maxim DL6 PRO. I'm using the Shoestring DSUSB cable and USB interface/control box. In the camera control window of Maxim, I select:
Setup Camera 1 > Nikon DSLR
Advanced > Camera Model > D7000
Shutter Release > DSUSB
Bulb Type > Wired
Bulb Exposure > 1 and over
Nikon DLL's = Default
OK
Setup Camera 2 > No Camera
Click on Connect > The following info appears in pop-up box

Error initializing camera or filter wheel
Error opening camera
Nikon plug-in could not connect to camera
Could not initialize Nikon module
Error selecting source
D7000 Firmware >
A 1.02
B 1.02
L 1.002
I'm confident the the connections between the camera/cable/control box/and laptop are correct because I can control the camera using another software package, DSLR Shutter by Stark Labs. Although DSLR Shutter is quite simplistic, it works seamlessly and consistently.

I have downloaded and run DSUSBCheck - which returns an affirmative connection.
I would appreciate any suggestions regarding a solution to this problem.

Thanks, Frank

Since I haven't seen any comments, I'll reply to may post with an update. I contacted Diffraction Limited through their forum and explained the problems I've been having. They recommended that I upgrade my software to 6.13. At $175.00 US, this is not an insignificant investment for a retired guy. However, this is something that I need to work. I also upgraded my Nikon D7000 firmware to the latest: A=1.04, B=1.05, L=1.002.

Attempting to run Maxim DL PRO 6.13 with shoestring interface and D7000 is a FAIL!

Exact same results.
Click on Connect > The following info appears in pop-up box
Error initializing camera or filter wheel
Error opening camera
Nikon plug-in could not connect to camera
Could not initialize Nikon module
Error selecting source

I closed Maxim DL6 and ran DSUSB. Response > DSUSB adapter found! I was able to open and close shutter.
I also ran DSLR Shutter. I was able to open and close shutter with variable delays and open shutter times with no problems.

Seems like something is wrong with the Maxim DL/D7000 communications.

I would be interested in knowing why you have listed your DSUSB product was compatible with the D7000 since it clearly is not! Has this combination actually been tested?

I would appreciate any constructive advise!

Thanks, Frank

Frank,

Sorry to hear about the issues you are having. The DSUSB is compatible with your camera since you are able to use DSUSBCheck to open and close the shutter. Thus it seems like the issue is Maxim DL compatibility with the DSUSB.

Let's start with the simple things. The DSUSB only controls the shutter remote control port on the camera. It does not provide an interface for all of the other functionality of the camera. So, you will need two connections between your PC and camera.

PC -> D7000 USB cable -> D7000
and PC -> DSUSB -> camera-specific adapter cable -> D7000

Do you have both of these connection paths in place?

Hello Doug and thank you for your reply! Yes, both cables connected, but there must have been a bad USB cable/connector. Since shutter control was OK, the culprit had to be the USB. I tried a new USB and now I have control of the camera with Maxim DL6.

Best regards,

Frank
