Modded CG-5 and QHY5 guider

Hello,
I've just modded my Celestron CG-5 motor controller with the Shoestring port kit and am trying to use the QHY5 to guide it in PHD.
However, the software will only move the mount in one direction on the DEC axis and none on the RA.
It seems the guider is only sending signals through one wire, as Ive done voltage tests and there is only a drop in voltage when the "North" button is pressed.
I found another thread on here regarding relays which seemed like it may be relevant, but I wanted to be sure, hence this post. (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=168&p=1003&hilit=qhy5#p1003)
Is my guider unable to control this modded mount? And if so, why does it work at all?
What do I need to make this work?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
