GPUSB Newbie Question

Post by greycap57 » Sun Feb 13, 2011 9:47 pm

Greetings-

I'm interested in setting up an autoguiding system using an Orion SS camera and a GPUSB. Since I haven't purchased anything yet, I'm having trouble visualizing all of the connections between all of the components. I want to use my PC to guide with the PHD software through my Vixen Sphinx SXD Star Book guider port. Now, I get the GPUSB hookup on that end but not the connection between the SS camera guider cable and the PC. Do I need another GPUSB inline there since the Orion has, I think, a RJ-12 plug on the guider cable end?

Any help...or pics, drawings, etc. would be great!

Thanks!

If you are referring to the Orion Starshoot Autoguider, then there is no need for the GPUSB. The RJ12 plug on the SSAG plugs into the autoguide port of the mount. It sort of like the GPUSB is built into the SSAG.

This document may provide some guidance, although it does not cover imagers like the SSAG that have an autoguide port interface built in.

Thanks Doug-

I guess I need to clarify my question. The Vixen Star Book hand controller has the autoguider port. There is no separate port on the mount itself. Since I will continue to use the Star Book as the main controller for my mount and linking my PC to the Star Book's autoguider port through the GPUSB for guiding, there is no place to plug in the Orion autoguider RJ-12 cable from the imager. So, what am I missing?

Thanks so much, Doug.

You would run an RJ12 cable from the RJ12 connector on the Orion Autoguider to the Star Book's autoguide port. No need to have the GPUSB at all. In this case, guiding commands would go from the computer to the Orion Autoguide and then to the Star Book.

Another possible option would be to include the GPUSB by running the RJ12 cable from the GPUSB to the Star Book's autoguide port and no cable connected to the RJ12 port of the Orion autoguide. In this case, guiding commands go from the computer, through the GPUSB and then to the Star Book.
