This is very strange indeed, and the first time I have heard of such a problem. Do you have access to a different computer that you could try the GPUSB and DSUSB on? Yes, in fact I just tried them both on a desktop PC, they both work. Im guessing I must have some sort of driver problem on the lapto...

This happens when the DSUSB is not talking to the computer. It is most likely because the DSUSB has gone bad, but it could be an intermittent connection. Try pushing in on the USB connector with your hand while trying DSUSBCheck. Also, have you tried any other software such as DSLR Shutter from htt...
